Football historian Leigh Edwards profiles every Walsall player from 60 post-war League seasons.

ALAN GODDERIDGE: The son of former Leicester City goalkeeper Albert Godderidge, this half-back joined Walsall from Swansea in July 1952 and made three third division (south) appearances for The Saddlers before moving to Tamworth in July 1953. He still lives in his native Tamworth in retirement.

BILLY GOFFIN: Former Aston Villa outside-left who joined Walsall in August 1954 and his solitary goal in eight third division (south) games came in the following month's 5-3 defeat at Bristol City. He became Tamworth's player-manager in August 1955, residing in Tamworth until his death in September 1987.

MARTIN GOLDSMITH: Local-born striker who signed professional for Walsall in August 1988 and made his League debut in the 4-2 defeat at home to Ipswich five months later. He scored twice in seven League outings prior to joining Atherstone in November 1992, then played for Worcester and Chasetown.

DON GOODMAN: Former West Brom and Wolves striker who joined Walsall from Motherwell in March 2001 and scored in that season's second division play-off Final triumph. He netted three goals in 25 League outings for The Saddlers before moving to Exeter City in August 2002, then played for Stafford Rangers.

MARK GOODWIN: Versatile midfielder who featured in Walsall's 1987-88 promotion success and scored twice in 92 League outings while at Fellows Park prior to joining Kettering Town in July 1990. He was then player-coach at Eastwood Town and Arnold before linking up with Trevor Christie again at Hucknall.

COLIN GORDON: Much-travelled striker who joined Walsall on loan from Birmingham in December 1990 and scored once in six League games for The Saddlers. Moving to Leicester City in July 1991, he then had a spell with Kidderminster and was Stourbridge's player-boss. He has sports-related business interests and is an agent to some of the games high-profile stars.

BOBBY GOUGH: Young striker who featured in Walsall's 1-1 draw at home to Swindon in October 1966. He moved to Port Vale in July 1968 and was a promotion winner in 1969-70, then joined Southport in July 1974. Later with Colchester, Hendon, Chelmsford, Tiptree and Wivenhoe, he became a publican in Essex.

KEITH GOUGH: Ex-England Schoolboy winger who turned professional at Fellows Park in February 1972 and made 15 third division appearances for Walsall prior to joining Oxford United in July 1972. He moved to Cheltenham Town in July 1975 and later played for home-town Willenhall where he has settled.

TONY GREALISH: Former Republic of Ireland International midfielder who scored once in 36 League outings for Walsall before moving to Bromsgrove Rovers in May 1992. He later played for Moor Green, Halesowen Harriers, Sutton Coldfield, Evesham, then was manager/coach of Bromsgrove and Atherstone.

BILLY GREEN: Versatile centre-half who was ever-present for Walsall in two consecutive seasons and netted eight goals in 180 League outings prior to joining Wrexham in June 1954. Moving to Wellington Town in July 1956, he later played for Caernarvon and Pwllheli. He died in Northampton in March 1996.

RICHARD GREEN: Former Shrewsbury and Gillingham central defender who joined Walsall in August 1998 and helped win promotion in 1998-99, scoring once in 30 second division games before joining Northampton Town in January 2000. A promotion winner again that season, he retired in July 2001.

RON GREEN: Goalkeeper who played for Walsall in the 1983-84 Milk Cup semi-finals and joined Shrewsbury in June 1984. Returning from Wimbledon in March 1989, he made 230 League appearances for The Saddlers, then played for various non-League clubs and became Coventry's community officer as well as coaching at the Walsall Centre of Excellence. He is now a postman.

FRANK GREGG: Long-serving right-back who was Player of the Year in 1966-67 and netted three goals in 393 League games prior to joining Burton Albion in July 1973, then played for Kidderminster Harriers. He now lives in Oldswinford and has spent 30 years as a general maintenance worker for Dudley Council.

STEVE GRITT: Former Charlton Athletic midfielder who joined Walsall in July 1989 and scored once in 20 League games before rejoining Charlton in February 1990. He was joint manager with Alan Curbishley, then managed Brighton and was Millwall's assistant-boss prior to rejoining Charlton as Academy manager.

ALAN GRUBB: Scottish winger who gained top-flight experience with Tottenham Hotspur prior to joining Walsall in August 1953. He played on the opposite flank to Fred Morris, making 15 League appearances for The Saddlers before moving to Worcester City in July 1954, then returned to Scotland.

BILLY GUEST: Former Birmingham and Blackburn winger who joined Walsall in August 1947, making five League appearances for The Saddlers, then playing for Kidderminster, Peterborough, Lovells, Rugby, Hinckley, Bilston and Dudley. Later a storeman at GEC Witton, he died in Blackburn in November 1994.

BRYN GUNN: Versatile right-back who joined Walsall on loan from Nottingham Forest in January 1986 and made six consecutive League appearances. He joined Peterborough United in August 1986, then played for Chesterfield, Hucknall, Corby, Nuneaton, Hednesford, Ilkeston and Arnold and is now a lorry driver.

BILL GUTTRIDGE: Tough-tackling left-back who featured in Walsall's rise from the fourth division to second in consecutive seasons and made 198 League appearances prior to joining Macclesfield Town in July 1962. He had a spell with Stourbridge, then was player-boss of Darlaston and still lives locally.

HARRY HADDINGTON: Influential right-back who was twice ever-present and skippered Walsall's 1959-60 fourth division title triumph. He made 226 League appearances while at Fellows Park until a broken leg in September 1960, then played for Worcester City and settled back in his native Yorkshire.

JACK HADLINGTON: Outside-left who joined Walsall from Cradley Heath in February 1954 and his solitary third division (south) appearance was in the following month's 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace. He later played for several local non-League teams and now lives in his native Brierley Hill in retirement.

PAUL HALL: Jamaican International midfielder who featured in Walsall's 2000-01 second division play-off Final triumph, netting ten goals in 52 League outings prior to joining Rushden & Diamonds in October 2001. He starred in their 2002-03 third division title triumph, since playing for Tranmere and Chesterfield.

RON HALL: Young wing-half who joined Walsall from Cradley Heath in June 1954 and made his League debut in the 2-1 defeat at Southampton three months later. Also appearing in The Saddlers' 4-2 reverse at Watford in November 1955, he moved to Stourbridge in July 1956 and settled in the West Midlands.

IAN HANDYSIDES: Ex-England Youth winger who helped Walsall beat Coventry City in the 1984-85 Milk Cup second round, netting 11 goals in 66 League games before returning to Birmingham City in March 1986. He was forced to retire through ill health in October 1988 and tragically died in August 1990.

JONNY HARKNESS: Northern Ireland Youth defender who was given his League debut in Walsall's 3-0 win at home to Stockport County in May 2005. He made just one more League appearance and had loan spells at Cambridge United and Halesowen Town before joining Kidderminster Harriers in January 2006.

KEVIN HARPER: Scotland U-21 midfielder who joined Walsall on loan from Derby County in December 1999, scoring once in nine League games. He moved to Portsmouth in March 2000 and helped win the first division title in 2002-03, then was loaned to Norwich and Leicester, joining Stoke City in February 2005. He had a spell on loan at Carlisle United during the 2006/07 campaign.

LEE HARPER: Former Arsenal goalkeeper who moved to Walsall from QPR in July 2001 and provided reliable cover for Jimmy Walker, making three consecutive first division appearances for The Saddlers. He joined Northampton Town in July 2002 and was an important figure in last season's promotion success. Now part of the MK Dons squad who are battling for promotion from League Two alongside The Saddlers.

GERRY HARRIS: Former England Under-23 left-back who helped Wolves win the League Championship and FA Cup before moving to Walsall in April 1966. Featuring as The Saddlers took Liverpool to an FA Cup fourth round replay in 1967-68, he made 15 League appearances until retiring. He now lives in Claverley.

JOHN HARRIS: Influential left-back who skippered Walsall's 1965-66 FA Cup third round win at Stoke City but suffered a serious knee injury in the opening match of the following season, scoring twice in 74 League games prior to becoming The Saddlers' reserve coach. He has since worked in the building trade.
