Football historian Leigh Edwards profiles every Walsall player from 60 post-war League seasons...
CHRIS WESTWOOD:Former Wolves and Hartlepool central defender who joined Walsall in July 2005. He was named in the PFA League Two 'Team of the Year' as The Saddlers won the title in 2006-07, scoring five goals in 69 League games while at Bescot Stadium before joining Peterborough United in July 2007 and helping them to promotion in 2007/08.
TERRY WHARTON:Experienced winger who reunited with Ronnie Allen at Walsall from Durban City in November 1973 and appeared in the following month's 2-0 win at home to Shrewsbury. He later played for Kidderminster Harriers, then managed several clubs including Stourbridge, Brewood and Wednesfield.
MALCOLM WHITE:Goalkeeper who joined Walsall from Grimsby Town in August 1963 and made 28 third division appearances before moving to Lincoln City in July 1964. He later played for Bradford City, Halifax Town, Los Angeles Wolves and Boston United. Now living in South Hykeham in retirement.
JIMMY WHITEHOUSE:Inside-left who netted eight times in 20 League games before joining Rochdale in July 1950, then was a prolific goalscorer for Carlisle United. Settling in Carlisle, he was a newsagent, then worked for Robertsons, at Willowholme power station and for Pirellis. He died in September 2005.
PHIL WHITEHOUSE:Former West Brom reserve left-back who joined Walsall in December 1989. He made his League debut in the following month's 1-1 draw at Leyton Orient but was unable to prevent a second consecutive relegation. Making 12 League appearances, he moved to Telford United in July 1991.
RAY WIGGIN:Young centre-forward who turned professional with Walsall in September 1962 and made his League debut in the following month's 3-2 defeat at Charlton Athletic. He netted six goals in 19 League games before joining Cambridge United in July 1964, then played for Nuneaton, Dudley and Corby.
CHRIS WILDER:Right-back who joined struggling Walsall on loan from Sheffield United in November 1989 and made four League appearances. He moved to Rotherham United in July 1992, then Notts County, Bradford City, Sheffield United again, Brighton and Halifax Town before managing Alfreton and currently Halifax.
GARY WILLIAMS:Young defender who joined Walsall on loan from Aston Villa in March 1980 and made nine League appearances while at Fellows Park. He helped Villa to win the League Championship and European Cup and moved to Leeds United in July 1987, then played for Watford and Bradford City.
JIMMY WILLIAMS:Versatile midfielder who helped Walsall regain third division status at the first attempt in 1979-80 and scored twice in 38 League games prior to joining Telford United in July 1980. He later returned to Worcester City, then had a second spell at Dudley Town and still lives and works locally.
JOHN WILLIAMS:Much-travelled striker who joined Walsall from Hereford in July 1997 and came on as a substitute in the following month's 3-1 defeat at Chesterfield. The 'Flying Postman' moved to Exeter in August 1997, then played for Cardiff, York, Darlington, Swansea, Kidderminster, Bath City, Redditch, Willenhall Town and Boldmere St. Michaels.
LEROY WILLIAMS:Teenage striker who turned professional with Walsall in August 2004 and scored a spectacular goal on his League debut shortly after coming on as a substitute in that month's 3-2 victory at home to Port Vale. He made six further League appearances that season and had a loan spell at Hereford.
WAYNE WILLIAMS:Former Shrewsbury and Northampton right-back who joined Walsall in August 1991 and helped qualify for the third division play-offs in 1992-93. He scored once in 56 League games for The Saddlers before joining Kidderminster Harriers in July 1993, then played for Bridgnorth Town.
GORDON WILLS:Versatile inside-left who was an experienced figure as Walsall battled vainly to avoid relegation in 1962-63, scoring once in 35 League outings while at Fellows Park prior to joining Sankeys in July 1964, then played for Dudley Town. He and his wife subsequently ran a grocery business in Walsall.
DENNIS WILSHAW:Wolves inside-forward who was loaned to Walsall during the early post-war era, netting 27 goals in 74 League games. Capped 12 times by England, he moved from Wolves to Stoke City in December 1957. He was head of community studies at Crewe and Alsager College and died in May 2004.
DAVE WILSON:Ex-Nottingham Forest, Carlisle United and Grimsby Town forward who joined Walsall in September 1968 and netted five goals in 35 League games before moving to Burnley in September 1969. Later with Chesterfield, he was Workington's player-manager, then worked for British Rail maintenance.
KEVIN WILSON:Northern Ireland International striker who played for Derby, Ipswich, Chelsea and Notts County before joining Walsall in August 1994. Ever-present in the 1994-95 promotion success, he netted 38 goals in 125 League games. Moving to Northampton in July 1997, he became their manager before having spells in charge of Kettering, Hucknall and Corby.
TOMMY WILSON:Former Nottingham Forest centre-forward who was an experienced figure as Walsall clinched promotion in 1960-61 and scored 19 goals in 53 League games before moving to Chelmsford City in July 1962. He later played for Brentwood Town and resided in Essex until his death in April 1992.
JACK WINTER:Ex-Sheffield United reserve centre-forward who scored twice on his League debut in Walsall's 2-1 win at home to Gillingham in January 1951. He netted 12 goals in 42 League games before joining Gravesend & Northfleet in July 1952, then played for Dover, Dartford and both Cambridge clubs.
STEVE WINTER:Teenage midfielder who turned professional with Walsall in March 1992 and played 18 League games. Moving via Yate Town and Taunton to Torquay United in August 1995, he had spells with Yeovil, Salisbury, Forest Green Rovers (1999 FA Trophy final), Dorchester, Basingstoke and Tiverton.
ALF WOOD:Experienced striker who starred in Walsall's 1977-78 FA Cup run and scored twice in 29 League games before joining Stafford Rangers in July 1978, then was commercial manager at Birmingham City and Stafford. He has since run his own promotions business and now lives in Sutton Coldfield.
TREVOR WOOD:Northern Ireland International goalkeeper who played for Brighton and Port Vale before joining Walsall in July 1994. He starred in the 1994-95 promotion success and made 69 League appearances for the Saddlers, moving to Hereford United in January 1997, then St Patrick's Athletic.
HORACE WOODWARD:Former Spurs and QPR centre-half who joined Walsall from Snowdown CW in July 1953 and made five League appearances. Later playing for Stourbridge and Bexleyheath & Welling, he then managed Kingsbury and was a driver for the British Oxygen Company. He died in June 2002.
JOHN WOODWARD:Ex-Stoke City and Aston Villa striker who netted 23 goals in 125 League games for Walsall before joining Port Vale in February 1973. He moved to Scunthorpe United in July 1975, then played for Belgian side Ostend and Kidderminster Harriers, since working in leisure centre management.
PETER WOODWARD:Ex-West Brom reserve goalkeeper who joined Walsall in August 1958 and made his League debut in that month's 3-0 defeat at Exeter City. He contested a first-team slot with John Savage, playing 13 League appearances. Later with Lockheed Leamington, he became Chatteris' player-coach.
DARREN WRACK:Long-serving midfielder who was ever-present in Walsall's 1998-99 promotion success and helped The Saddlers regain first division status at the first attempt in 2000-01. He overcame a broken leg to feature in our 2006/07 League Two title triumph. Celebrated his Testimonial Year in 2007/08 before being released in May 2008.
ALAN WRIGHT:Young inside-forward who scored in his solitary League appearance for Walsall in the 5-3 defeat at Crewe Alexandra in March 1959. He joined Weymouth in June 1960 and starred as they reached the Southern League Cup final in 1963-64, then had a spell as Bedford Town's player-manager.
BERNIE WRIGHT:Striker who netted 40 goals in 167 League games overall during two spells at Walsall prior to joining Bradford City in February 1977, then played for Port Vale, Kidderminster, Trowbridge, Cheltenham, Worcester and Gloucester. He has since worked as a warehouse foreman in West Bromwich.
EVRAN WRIGHT:Striker who moved from Halesowen Town to Walsall in August 1993 and regularly featured as a substitute, netting five goals in 29 League games for The Saddlers. He later played for Barry Town, Stafford Rangers, Bilston Town and Halesowen again. His son Mark also appeared for Walsall.
GEOFF WRIGHT:Former Aston Villa reserve forward who joined Walsall from Rugby Town in March 1952 and made his League debut in the 5-3 defeat at home to Bristol Rovers five months later. His solitary goal in 16 third division (south) games came in the 4-2 reverse against Crystal Palace in February 1953.
MARK WRIGHT:The son of former Walsall striker Evran Wright, this midfielder signed professional for The Saddlers in January 2001 and featured in the 2000-01 promotion campaign. He helped win the League Two title in 2006-07 and scored nine goals in 124 League games before joining MK Dons in July 2007 and helping them to promotion this term.
ERIC YOUNG:Ex-England Youth midfielder who joined Walsall on loan from Manchester United in October 1973 and made eight League appearances while at Fellows Park. Also loaned to Peterborough and Stockport, he moved to Darlington in July 1974, then had a spell at Whitby Town and played in Australia.
BILLY YOUNGER:Young inside-forward who scored five times in eight League games prior to joining Doncaster Rovers in December 1961. He later played for Hartlepools United and Ramsgate, then settled in Cramlington and spent 35 years as a warehouseman for George Angus Ltd until retiring in September 1999.
DAVID ZDRILIC:Australia International striker who played for Sydney United, Aarau, SSV Ulm and Unterhaching before moving to Walsall in August 2002. He scored the FA Cup fourth round winner against Wimbledon and netted three goals in 24 League games for The Saddlers, joining Aberdeen in August 2003 before returning to his homeland.
