Football historian Leigh Edwards profiles every Walsall player from 60 post-war League seasons.
JOHN SHARPLES:Former Aston Villa left-back who helped Walsall rise from the fourth division to second in consecutive seasons. Scoring once in 125 League outings prior to joining Darlaston in July 1964, he later played for Hednesford Town. He became an engineer in Wolverhampton and died in June 2001.
GARY SHAW:Former Aston Villa and England Under-21 striker who joined Walsall from Austrian side FC Klagenfurt in February 1990. He netted three goals in nine League games for The Saddlers before moving to Kilmarnock in August 1990. Later with Shrewsbury and Ernst Boreal, he is now a Villa match summariser.
GARY SHELTON:England Under-21 midfielder who made 24 League appearances prior to joining Aston Villa in January 1978. He moved to Sheffield Wednesday in March 1982, then played for Oxford United, Bristol City, Rochdale and was Chester City's player-coach before joining West Bromwich Albion's coaching staff.
JACK SHELTON:Former Wolves reserve full-back who was ever-present for Walsall in 1937-38 and made almost 200 wartime appearances for The Saddlers. He netted five goals in 103 League outings before moving to Worcester City in July 1947, then joined Headington's backroom staff and died in January 1992.
GREG SHIELDS:Former Scotland Under-21 full-back who joined Walsall on loan from Charlton Athletic in February 2002 and made seven first division appearances while at Bescot Stadium. He moved to Kilmarnock initially on loan in March 2002 and has been with Dunfermline Athletic since January 2004.
BOBBY SHINTON:Striker who netted 20 goals in 79 League outings prior to joining Cambridge United in March 1974. He moved to Wrexham in July 1976, then played for Manchester City, Newcastle United, Millwall, Worcester, Weymouth and Malvern. Now running his own double glazing business in Worcester.
CHRIS SHUKER:Diminutive winger who joined Walsall on loan from Manchester City in February 2003 and made five first division appearances while at Bescot Stadium. Also loaned to Macclesfield Town, Rochdale and Hartlepool, he joined Barnsley in March 2004 and moved to Tranmere Rovers in July 2006.
DAVE SIMMONS:Striker who moved to Walsall on loan from Aston Villa in October 1970 and scored twice in five League outings. He joined Colchester United in December 1970, then played for Cambridge United, Brentford and Cambridge again. Later an insurance agent in Cambridge, he died in July 2007.
FITZROY SIMPSON:Jamaica International midfielder who appeared for Swindon, Manchester City, Portsmouth and Hearts before moving to Walsall in March 2001. He scored four times in 63 League games, joining Telford in June 2003, then playing for Linfield, Horadada, Havant & Waterloooville and currently Eastleigh.
PAUL SIMPSON:Former England Under-21 winger who joined Walsall on loan from Wolves in September 1998 and scored once in ten second division outings while at Bescot Stadium. He moved to Blackpool in August 2000, then had spells as player-boss of Rochdale and Carlisle United before managing Preston.
TERRY SIMPSON:Versatile wing-half who helped Walsall take Liverpool to an FA Cup fourth round replay in 1967-68, netting four goals in 51 League games before moving to Gillingham in July 1968. He has settled in Southampton and worked at the local docks, then on the Ford Transit production line.
RONNIE SINCLAIR:Former Scotland Youth goalkeeper who joined Walsall on loan from Bristol City in September 1991, making ten fourth division appearances for The Saddlers. He moved to Stoke City in November 1991 and joined Chester City in August 1996, then returned to Stoke as goalkeeping coach.
MARTIN SINGLETON:Ex-England Youth midfielder who reunited with Kenny Hibbitt at Walsall from Northampton Town in September 1990. He scored once in 28 League games before joining Aylesbury in July 1991, then Worcester, Stafford and Banbury. Now a sales rep for Cherwell Windows in Banbury.
LEE SINNOTT:England Youth defender who scored twice in 40 League outings, moving to Watford in September 1983. He appeared in the 1984 FA Cup Final and joined Bradford City in July 1987, then played for Crystal Palace, Bradford City again, Huddersfield and Oldham, since managing Farsley and currently Port Vale.
GRAHAM SISSONS:Experienced central defender who helped Walsall win at top-flight Stoke City in the 1965-66 FA Cup third round, scoring once in 98 third division games for The Saddlers prior to joining Stourbridge in July 1968. Later a hospital worker in Erdington, he still lives in Birmingham in retirement.
BILL SKIDMORE:Popular left-back who was a regular penalty taker and netted ten goals in 99 League games for The Saddlers prior to joining Frickley Colliery in July 1951. He later played for Scarborough and worked alongside Henry Walters at Cortonwood Colliery, residing in Barnsley until his death in June 2004.
JUSTIN SKINNER:Midfielder who joined Walsall on loan from Bristol Rovers in September 1997 and scored that month's League Cup winner at Nottingham Forest, making ten second division appearances for The Saddlers. He joined Hibernian in March 1998 and later played for Dunfermline Athletic and Montrose.
PETER SKIPPER:Central defender who featured in Walsall's 1989-90 relegation battle and scored twice in 81 League outings before joining Wrexham in September 1991. He then played for Wigan, Stafford and Wigan again. Settling in Hull, he has since been a publican, also working for an oil rig supply company.
ERIC SKORA:French midfielder who joined Walsall on loan from Preston in November 2005 and scored on his debut in a 2-0 victory over Gillingham, netting twice in four League outings for The Saddlers until injury curtailed his loan spell. He returned to Kilmarnock in January 2006 but suffered further injury and has recently been forced to quit the professional game.
DAVID SLOAN:Former Northern Ireland International winger who featured in Walsall's 1974-75 FA Cup run until injured, netting three goals in 49 third division games prior to joining Bridlington Trinity in July 1975. He was caretaker of Burton Upon Stather Primary School for nearly 25 years until retirement.
FRANK SLYNN:Former Sheffield Wednesday wing-half who joined Walsall from Bury in September 1953 and made ten third division (south) appearances while at Fellows Park, moving to Stocksbridge in July 1954. He worked in the smelting shop at Samuel Fox's Steelworks in Sheffield until retirement.
ALF SMITH:Outside-left who joined Walsall from Bilston in October 1953 and made his solitary League appearance in that month's 2-0 defeat at home to Millwall. One of nine different players who featured on the left wing for struggling Walsall that season, he later played local football, settling in Wolverhampton.
CHRIS SMITH:Former trainee striker who made his solitary League appearance as a substitute in Walsall's 1-0 defeat at home to Brentford in February 1996. He briefly joined Stourbridge in September 1996, then was a regular scorer for Bromsgrove Rovers, Blakenall, Solihull Borough and Hinckley United.
DEAN SMITH:Central defender who starred as Walsall qualified for the third division play-offs in 1992-93, scoring twice in 142 League games before joining Hereford United in June 1994. He moved to Leyton Orient in June 1997 and became their captain, then played for Sheffield Wednesday and Port Vale. Now assistant manager at League One rivals, Leyton Orient.
GEORGE SMITH:Centre-forward who played for local sides before joining Walsall as an amateur. He made his solitary League appearance in The Saddlers' 1-0 defeat at home to Swindon in September 1953. One of 12 different players who led Walsall's attack that season, he quickly returned to local football.
GRANT SMITH:Much-travelled Scottish winger who joined struggling Walsall on loan from Bristol City in January 2006. Impressing with his hard work as The Saddlers battled vainly to avoid relegation, he netted three goals in 13 League One games while at Bescot Stadium. He joined Dundee United in August 2006.
JIMMY SMITH:Scottish outside-left who joined Walsall from Coatdyke Juniors in June 1948 and made his League debut in place of Lou Tinkler in The Saddlers' 3-1 win at home to Crystal Palace eight months later. He also appeared in the next match, a 4-3 victory over Exeter, then returned to his native Coatbridge.
PAUL SMITH:Experienced midfielder who moved to Walsall from Gillingham in August 2005 and scored once in eight League games for The Saddlers. He had a loan spell back at Gillingham prior to joining fellow strugglers Swindon Town in January 2006, then played for AFC Sudbury and Torquay United.
