Football historian Leigh Edwards profiles every Walsall player from 60 post-war League seasons.

CARL ROBINSON: Welsh International midfielder who joined Walsall on loan from Portsmouth in July 2002, scoring once in 11 League outings while at Bescot Stadium. He moved to Sunderland in March 2004 and helped them win The Championship title in 2004-05, since playing for Norwich City and Toronto FC.

DAVE ROBINSON:Former Birmingham City central defender who helped Walsall reach the FA Cup fifth round in 1974-75, netting three goals in 165 third division games prior to joining Tamworth in July 1977 and also managed Oldbury United. He now works for West Midlands Hire, living in Sutton Coldfield.

JOHN ROBINSON:Irish wing-half who was a Wolves reserve prior to joining Walsall in March 1947. He made his League debut in that month's 2-2 draw at Port Vale, playing five third division (south) games before being released in May 1948. Later living and working in Wolverhampton, he died in October 1981.

MARVIN ROBINSON:Ex-England Schoolboy striker who played for Derby, Chesterfield, Notts County and Rushden & Diamonds before joining Walsall in December 2004. He netted four goals in ten League games, moving to Stockport in March 2005, then playing for Lincoln, Macclesfield, Oxford United and Cambridge United on loan. Currently out long-term injured having been involved in a car crash late last year.

SIMON ROBINSON:Midfielder who joined Walsall from Alvechurch in December 1991 and made his solitary League appearance as a substitute in the following month's 0-0 draw at home to Cardiff City. He moved to Halesowen Town in January 1994, then played for Worthing, Wealdstone and Worthing again.

DARREN ROGERS:Skilful, overlapping left-back who overcame a cruciate ligament injury to make 58 League appearances for Walsall prior to joining Stevenage Borough in October 1997. He suffered further injury soon afterwards and was released but subsequently revived his career with Evesham United.

ALAN ROPER:Versatile right-back who turned professional for Walsall in May 1959 and made his League debut in the 3-2 victory at Middlesbrough in September 1962. He scored twice in 53 League outings for The Saddlers before joining Dudley Town in July 1965 and is still living in his native Tipton.

IAN ROPER:Long-serving central defender who was a trainee at Walsall before turning professional in May 1995. A promotion winner with The Saddlers in 1998-99, 2000-01 and 2006-07, he also helped reach the FA Cup fifth round in two consecutive seasons and has now scored six goals in 312 League outings.

LOUIS ROSS:Irish left-back who joined Walsall from Queen of the South in August 1948 and made his League debut in the following month's 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth. He was one of five different players who appeared at left-back that season, playing eight League games for The Saddlers. He died in April 1990.

STEVE ROUND:Young striker who turned professional for Walsall in March 1980 and made his League debut in the 1-1 draw at home to Chesterfield in September 1981. He regularly featured as a substitute and netted three goals in 24 third division games while at Fellows Park. Now living in Rushwick, Worcester.

NORMAN ROWE (1):A former Aston Villa amateur, this winger joined Walsall in March 1959 and understudied Colin Askey and Colin Taylor as The Saddlers won promotion in two consecutive seasons. He made six League appearances before joining Rugby Town in July 1961, then played for Nuneaton Borough.

NORMAN ROWE (2):Ex-Derby County right-back who moved to Walsall in August 1952 and contested a first-team slot with fellow newcomer Harry Freeman. Making 26 third division (south) appearances as The Saddlers finished bottom of the table, he joined King's Lynn in July 1953. He died in September 1988.

JOHN RUDDY:Ex-England Youth goalkeeper who joined Walsall on loan from Everton in September 2005 and made five League One appearances while at Bescot Stadium. He has since had loan spells at Rushden & Diamonds, Chester, Stockport, Wrexham and Bristol City, also appearing in the Premiership.

RON RUSSON:Former Wolves reserve centre-half who joined Walsall from Hednesford in May 1948 and scored once in 141 third division (south) games for The Saddlers before moving to Stourbridge in July 1955. He later played for Brierley Hill Alliance and lived and worked locally until his death in April 1981.

STUART RYDER:England Under-21 central defender who helped Walsall qualify for the third division play-offs in 1992-93, then win promotion in 1994-95. He netted five goals in 101 League games before moving to Mansfield Town in July 1998, then played for Nuneaton Borough, Stafford and Hednesford.

VINNY SAMWAYS:Former England Under-21 midfielder who starred for Spurs and Everton in the top-flight, then spent six years playing in Spain with Las Palmas and Seville. He joined Walsall in February 2003 and scored twice in 42 League games before returning to Spain with Algeciras in May 2004.

PAUL SANDERSON:Winger who had spells at Chester, Halifax and Cardiff before moving to Walsall in March 1988. He featured in that season's third division play-off Final triumph and made three League appearances, then played for Newport, Merthyr, Newport again, Yeovil, Barry Town and Trowbridge.

KEN SATCHWELL:Former Coventry City winger who joined Walsall from Nuneaton Borough in January 1965 and netted seven goals in 57 League outings before moving to Wellington Town in July 1967. He later played for Stourbridge, then was a paint sprayer for BL and machinist for Land Rover.

CARL SAUNDERS:Former Stoke City and Bristol Rovers striker who briefly played for Oxford United before moving to Walsall in February 1994. He made two League appearances prior to joining Maltese side Sliema Wanderers in August 1994. Now community liaison officer for Avon & Somerset Constabulary.

JOHN SAUNDERS:Former Welsh Schoolboy defender who featured prominently as Walsall defeated Manchester United and Newcastle en route to the FA Cup fifth round in 1974-75. He scored twice in 99 League outings for The Saddlers before injury ended his career in November 1975 and settled locally.

JOHN SAVAGE:Giant goalkeeper who had understudied Bert Trautmann at Manchester City prior to joining Walsall in January 1958. He represented the third division (south) and played 51 League games for The Saddlers before moving to Wigan Athletic in July 1959. Now living in Blackpool in retirement.

ANDY SAVILLE:Much-travelled striker who scored five goals in 38 League games for Walsall prior to joining Barnsley in March 1990. He later played for Hartlepool United, Birmingham City, Preston North End, Wigan Athletic, Cardiff City, Scarborough, Gainsborough Trinity and Goole. Now a postman in Hull.

RICKY SBRAGIA:Central defender who starred in Walsall's 1979-80 promotion triumph and netted four goals in 77 League games prior to joining Blackpool in July 1980, then played for York City where he was youth coach. He has since held similar posts at Sunderland, Manchester United and now Sunderland again.

JACK SCARLETT:Young inside-forward who turned professional with Walsall in March 1952 and made his League debut in the 3-1 defeat at home to Ipswich Town eight months later. Scoring twice in ten League outings before joining Bloxwich Strollers in July 1954, he tragically died at 25 in February 1960.

DION SCOTT:Young central defender who was a trainee at Bescot Stadium and turned professional in May 1999. He made two substitute appearances for Walsall before moving to Mansfield Town in July 2002, then joined Kidderminster Harriers in January 2003 and has since played for Nuneaton Borough and Tividale.

JIMMY SEAL:Young striker who joined Walsall from Wolves in December 1970 after a loan spell and netted 14 goals in 41 League games overall before moving to Barnsley in May 1971. Later with York, Darlington, Rochdale, Gainsborough, Goole and Bridlington, he is a painter and decorator in Wigginton.

DAVE SERELLA:Long-serving central defender who featured in Walsall's 1977-78 FA Cup run and 1979-80 promotion success, netting 12 goals in 267 League games for The Saddlers prior to joining Blackpool in August 1982. He played for Altrincham and Chorley and has settled in Lytham St. Annes.

CRAIG SHAKESPEARE:Midfielder who starred in Walsall's 1983-84 Milk Cup run and 1987-88 promotion success. He netted 45 goals in 284 League games, joining Sheffield Wednesday in June 1989, then West Bromwich Albion, Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Telford and Blakenall, since coaching at West Bromwich Albion's Academy.
