Football historian Leigh Edwards profiles every Walsall player from 60 post-war League seasons.
TOM McGAIRY: Former Dunfermline Athletic inside-forward who helped Hamilton Academicals win promotion before joining Walsall in August 1954. His solitary goal in seven League games came in the 2-0 victory at Brentford two months later and he later played for Dundee United, then settled back in Glasgow.
KEN McGOWAN: Centre-forward who scored on his League debut to clinch Walsall's 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace in December 1947. He contested a first-team slot with Dave Massart, netting four goals in 11 League games before joining Kidderminster Harriers in October 1948, settling back in Wolverhampton.
WILLIE McINTOSH: Scottish centre-forward who played for Preston, Blackpool and Stoke prior to joining Walsall in November 1952. He displaced Jack Bridgett in attack and scored nine goals in 22 League games as The Saddlers finished bottom of the third division (south) that season. He died in February 1990.
TONY MACKEN: Former Republic of Ireland International right-back who starred in Walsall's 1979-80 promotion success. He scored once in 190 League games before returning to Waterford in June 1982, then became Drogheda's player-boss. Later managing Home Farm, he has settled back in his native Dublin.
RICHARD McKINNEY: Irish goalkeeper who joined Walsall from Colchester United in July 2004 and played in the opening three League games of the 2004-05 campaign. He was one of five different 'keepers who appeared in League One for The Saddlers that season and moved to Canvey Island in April 2005. Also serving Chelmsford Town during 2006/07.
ALLEN McKNIGHT: Northern Ireland International goalkeeper who joined Walsall from Rotherham United in November 1991 and made eight fourth division appearances for The Saddlers. He later played for South China (HK), Exeter City, Collier Row and Romford and has since worked in the timber business.
HUGH McLAREN: Ex-Derby County winger who joined Walsall from Nottingham Forest in July 1955 and netted eight goals in 31 third division (south) games for The Saddlers before moving to Burton Albion in July 1956, then played for Gresley Rovers. He resided in Derby until his death in December 1965.
JIM McLAUGHLIN: Scottish inside-forward who played for Celtic and was loaned to Glenavon before joining Walsall in June 1948. He contested a first-team slot with Ken McGowan, playing 14 League games for The Saddlers before released in May 1950, then returned to Renfrew and settled back in Glasgow.
WILLIE McLEAN: Scottish inside-right who made his League debut in Walsall's 1-0 defeat at Crystal Palace in February 1954 and retained his place as The Saddlers suffered a 3-1 reverse at Reading four days later. Displaced by new signing Ken Lewis, he then played for Chippenham United and died in June 1996.
PAUL McLOUGHLIN: Striker who joined Walsall on loan from Wolves in September 1991 and netted four goals in nine League games before joining Mansfield Town in January 1992, helping clinch promotion that season. He later played for Bath City, Weston-Super-Mare, Forest Green Rovers and Clevedon Town.
STEVE McMANUS: The son of former Bradford City goalkeeper and current Saddlers' coach, Eric McManus, this midfielder made his solitary League appearance as a substitute in Walsall's 2-0 win over Barnet two months before turning professional in May 1993. He moved to Hinckley Athletic in September 1994, then played local football.
BOB McMORRAN: Scottish winger who had a spell with Manchester United prior to joining Walsall in February 1950. His only goal in eight League games came in the following month's 2-2 draw at Southend and he later played for Northwich Victoria and Macclesfield Town. He died in Paisley in September 1990.
JIMMY McMORRAN: Ex-Aston Villa midfielder who moved to Swansea in June 1968 but rejoined Walsall four months later and netted ten goals in 104 League games overall before moving to Notts County in June 1969. He played for several non-League clubs and worked at Kirkpatrick's Foundry in Walsall.
IAN McPARLAND: Former Notts County striker who joined Walsall from Hull City in March 1991 and netted six goals in 11 League outings for The Saddlers prior to joining Dunfermline Athletic in July 1991. He later played for Lincoln City, Northampton Town and Arnold before coaching at Nottingham Forest.
ALBERT McPHERSON: Long-serving centre-half who skippered Walsall to promotion in 1960-61 and was ever-present in 1961-62. He netted eight goals in 351 League games prior to joining Stourbridge in July 1964 and subsequently spent 20 years as West Bromwich Albion's trainer. Still living locally in retirement.
PAUL McSHANE: Republic of Ireland Under-21 defender who joined Walsall on loan from Manchester United in January 2003 and scored once in four League outings. Also loaned to Brighton, he joined West Bromwich Albion as part of the Tomasz Kuszczak deal in August 2006 and now has five full International caps. Joined Premiership-bound Sunderland in the summer of 2007.
JERMAINE McSPORRAN: Former Wycombe Wanderers winger who moved to Walsall in March 2004 and made six consecutive first division appearances while at Bescot Stadium. He joined Doncaster Rovers in June 2004, then had a loan spell at Boston United and has since played for Chester City and Kidlington.
JOHNNY MAHER: Former Manchester City amateur inside-right who joined Walsall in May 1954 and made his only third division (south) appearance in The Saddlers' 2-1 defeat at Southampton four months later. He moved to Gillingham in July 1955, then played for Guildford City, Margate, Ashford and Dover.
NORMAN MALE: Ex-West Bromwich Albion left-back who joined Walsall in March 1938, playing for The Saddlers either side of World War II. He scored twice in 70 third division (south) games before retiring in August 1949, then was on the Fellows Park groundstaff for 20 years. He died in Tipton in December 1992.
JOHN MANNING: Much-travelled centre-forward who joined Walsall from Bolton in July 1971 and netted six goals in 14 League games before returning to Tranmere in March 1972. He played for Crewe and Barnsley, then coached overseas. Later a sales manager for a chemical firm, he settled back in Liverpool.
MARCELO: Brazilian striker who played for Sheffield United and Birmingham before joining Walsall in February 2002. His solitary goal in nine first division games clinched a 1-0 victory at home to Burnley and he helped The Saddlers avoid relegation, moving to Portuguese side Academica Coimbra in July 2002.
CHRIS MARSH: Long-serving full-back who was an experienced figure in Walsall's 1998-99 promotion success and netted 23 goals in 392 League games before being sold to Wycombe Wanderers for £30,000 in March 2001. He joined Northampton Town in September 2001 but recurring injuries curtailed his career. He recently returned from a coaching spell in Australia.
JULIAN MARSHALL: Central defender who appeared for Hereford United and Bristol City, where he was a member of the 'Ashton Gate Eight', then moved to Walsall in August 1982. He played ten League games before joining Worcester City in July 1983, then played for Stourbridge where he has settled.
ROBERTO MARTINEZ: Spanish midfielder who played for Wigan Athletic, then Motherwell prior to joining Walsall in August 2002. He made six League appearances, moving to Swansea City in January 2003 and helping them win promotion and The Football League Trophy before becoming an important member of the Chester City side. He returned to the Liberty Stadium as manager in February 2007.
MIKE MASON: Teenage forward who turned professional at Fellows Park in September 1962 and made his League debut in Walsall's 2-1 victory at home to Notts County in October 1963. He made four third division appearances before joining West Bromwich Albion in July 1964, then played for Stourbridge and Hednesford.
DAVE MASSART: Former Birmingham City centre-forward who was Walsall's leading marksman in 1947-48, scoring 23 goals in 27 League games prior to joining Bury in March 1948. He later played for Chesterfield and Weymouth, where he ran a post office, then was a hotelier and died in December 1993.
PEDRO MATIAS: Spanish Under-21 winger who played for Macclesfield Town and Tranmere Rovers before moving to Walsall in October 1999. He featured in the 2000-01 second division play-off final triumph and netted 24 goals in 141 League games prior to joining Kidderminster in November 2004, then returned to Spain where he still plays in the lower Leagues.
GRAHAM MATTHEWS: Former Stoke City forward who joined Walsall in August 1963 and was leading marksman in 1963-64, netting 21 goals in 67 third division games while at Fellows Park before moving to Crewe Alexandra in August 1965 where injury ended his career. He has since lived and worked in Stoke.
