Bill 'Chopper' Guttridge
KNOWN simply as 'Chopper', this tough-tackling full-back gave The Saddlers sterling service for almost eight years following his transfer from Wolves in November 1954.
Guttridge played for Metro Shaft FC in the Wolverhampton Works League before joining the Molineux club as a professional in March 1948, making his League debut in the local derby against Aston Villa on Christmas Day 1951.
He could never establish himself in the Wolves team, though, and moved on to Fellows Park.
Injury forced him into early retirement in 1962 after he had appeared in over 200 games for Walsall, during which time he helped us secured successive promotions in 1959/60 and 1960/61.
He went on to coach the young players at the club and regularly attends former player events here at the Banks's Stadium.
