MANNY Smith's patience paid off on Tuesday evening as he was given a first start of the campaign.

Now, with Ian Roper sidelined with a broken foot, Smith is hoping to maintain his place for The Saddlers' remaining games in the hope of extending his Banks's Stadium stay.

After making three appearances towards the back end of last season, Smith has had to bide his time for an opportunity this time around.

The 19 year-old put in a solid performance against Bristol Rovers earlier in the week and is looking to build on that in the coming weeks.

"I was pleased with how things went on Tuesday," he said. I was pleased with my performance and I've been waiting to get out there and show people that I can play.

"I've been waiting to play all season, so it was good to get a game and now I want to grab the chance with both hands. A lot of the young lads have been given their chance before now but I haven't got any complaints because there have been other defenders ahead of me.

"Now though, I've got a chance to show what I'm capable of. I want to keep my place in the team between now and the end of the season and earn a new contract here.

"I want to stay at Walsall. I enjoy it here."
