PAUL Boertien returns to Carlisle this weekend for the first time since leaving The Cumbrians nine years ago.

The left-back began his career at Brunton Park where he made 21 appearances before joining Derby County in 1999 for £250,000.

Boertien, who supported Carlisle as a youngster, has fond memories of his time with the club and is looking forward to his return. "It's nice to be going back to Carlisle," he said. "As a kid I used to support Carlisle and Liverpool. I'd watch Carlisle quite regularly but then if I wanted the glory, I'd go and see Liverpool!

"I've been there to watch a few games but haven't played there since I left the club. I'm not sure what sort of reception I'll get because it's been a while since I was there and I only played 20-odd games for them before moving to Derby.

"It's a massive game. They're fifth and we're fourth so it should be good."

The 29 year-old has returned to The Saddlers' starting line-up in recent weeks following a lengthy absence through injury. With Daniel Fox handing in a transfer request earlier this month, Boertien's return was timely to say the least and now, with Fox's move to the Ricoh Arena complete, he is determined to stay fit and help the team progress.

"I feel good and obviously delighted to be back in the team. I've played the last three games and we've drawn two and won the other, which has kept us on our good unbeaten run.

"We're in good form and will be doing all we can to stay in the promotion pack."
