THE SADDLERS ended their away League programme with a 2-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town.
A tenth minute corner for the home side found its way over to skipper, Robert Page at the far post and his header back into the danger zone saw Clayton Ince clear ahead of the lurking Danny Schofield.
A probing ball by Alex Nicholls from the left wing forced a corner as Walsall, who were under the caretaker guidance of Jimmy Mullen for the first time, looked to threaten for the first time. The resulting flag-kick was cleared by The Terriers.
There was a good opening for the home side as the lively Schofield found space in a decent position inside the area but his effort was weak and easily gathered by Ince.
There was a definite end of season feel to the proceedings, with little urgency or tempo to the game on a mild afternoon and an array of fancy dress costumes amongst the travelling contingent.
A cross from Kevin Betsy was just to high for Tommy Mooney, whilst Page tried his luck from distance at the other end only for Ince to deny him.
Ince was called into action with a fine save on 34 minutes as Andy Holdsworth got in behind Richard Taundry to hit a shot that was acrobatically pushed over the crossbar.
Huddersfield took the lead five minutes before the interval when Schofield was played in with a neat through-ball and he cut through the heart of The Saddlers' back-line before firing beyond Ince.
The last action of the half saw Michael Dobson feed Mark Bradley who in turn picked out Betsy but he was off target.
Three minutes into the second period, Dobson's corner found the head of Manny Smith who headed the ball into the ground and this made the save for Matt Glennon easier.
It was 2-0 on 55 minutes when a cross from the left was headed home by veteran goal-getter, Andy Booth.
Ishmel Demontagnac replaced Rhys Weston just past the hour before Nicholls was picked out in space on the right and his teasing cross was headed out from in front of his own goal by Page.
After Booth went close with a curling shot, Betsy twisted and turned before making space for a shot that was deflected on it's way to forcing Glennon, who was making his 100th appearance for The Terriers, into a decent save.
Mooney played in Betsy on 72 minutes but he drilled his shot wide of the mark. Then a late free-kick was headed back across goal by Mooney only for Anthony Gerrard's attempts to turn the ball home end with Glennon making a comfortable save.
With time running out, Nicholls' cross was headed over at the near post by Bradley as the action ended with Ince making a couple of neat saves.
