There was a decent opening for the visitors on eight minutes as Michael Mackay twisted and turned to make room for a shot that flew over.

Within a minute Walsall had taken the lead with our first raid on goal as a neat move ended with Michael Dobson's effort from distance arrowing into the net.

After Michael Nelson went close for Pool, Kevin Betsy's alterness saw him set up Tommy Mooney but his effort from close range was deflected wide with the 'keeper struggling.

A long ball by Dobson on 12 minutes picked out Mooney who cleverly played in Betsy. He then set up Alex Nicholls for a shooting chance that just crept wide of the target.

A lively start for The Saddlers culminated with a second goal on the quarter-hour mark as Mooney fired home with a low shot across the 'keeper.

The visitors pulled a goal back when Mackay turned the ball home at the far post after a low cross wasn't cleared properly.

Some excellent play out wide by Ishmel Demontagnac saw his cross find the head of Mooney who put the ball back into the danger zone where Betsy just failed to connect properly.

With half-time approaching, Andy Monkhouse saw his inviting low ball gathered through a crowd by Ince.

Demontagnac looked to spark the second period into life only to have his progress halted by Antony Sweeney. The resulting free-kick by Taundry saw Betsy's goalwards flick cleared by the visitors.

Hartlepool upped the pressure and Ince had to save well before Manny Smith blocked from James Brown. In the next attack, Bradley cleared off the line from a corner and then Taundry bravely got in the way of Monkhouse's effort.

With 75 minutes on the clock, a goalmouth scramble ended with Mackay blasting over from a good position in front of goal as three players lay injured in the goalmouth. Happily after treatment Taundry and Sweeney were able to continue.

Michael Nelson's effort was well saved by Ince before Darren Wrack entered the action in place of Bradley.

A breakaway out of defence following Ince's powerful punch saw Betsy play in Demontagnac who was denied on the edge of the area by a timely block from the  alert Arran Lee-Barrett in the visitors' goal.

There was a late booking for Weston, whilst youth teamer, Josh Craddock was given his senior debut in place of Nicholls.

The youngster showed some nice touches as he got involved in the action.

In injury time at the end, Demontagnac missed a good chance before the visitors broke away and Brown bundled home from close range to level the scores.
